What is Flight Carbon Footprint?

The flight carbon footprint represents the total amount of greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2), that are emitted by an airplane during a flight. These emissions are a significant contributor to climate change and global warming. Because airplane emissions are released at high altitudes, they have a greater impact on the climate. However, the calculation of a flight's carbon footprint depends on various factors, including the duration of the flight and the type of aircraft used.

Breaking Down the Process: How Is Airplane Carbon Footprint Measured?

Air travel is assessed based on the distance flown, or air kilometers. The carbon footprint of a flight is typically determined by multiplying the distance flown by the CO2 emissions per air kilometer. On average, a single passenger generates about 90 grams of CO2 per kilometer flown.

Using this information, you can estimate the carbon footprint of a flight based on the distance covered. For instance, a 1,000 kilometer flight would produce a carbon footprint of roughly 90 kg/CO2 (90 grams x 1,000 km = 90,000 g/CO2 = 90 kg/CO2). However, this only accounts for emissions from the flight, not the total carbon footprint of the entire journey, such as traveling to the airport and staying overnight.
